JapanFOSangam.jpg“Friends of Sangam Japan organised a 3-day tour to Hokkaido from 18 to 20 February 2012. The tour aimed to deepen exchanges between Friends of Sangam members, who support the Sangam World Centre, and increase new membership.
23 members and non-members participated in the tour. On the first day, they visited Abashiri Prison Museum and in the evening played Hyakunin Isshu, a traditional Japanese card game. They also had a talk by a member of the Ainu indigenous people of Hokkaido. On the second day, they crossed the Sea of Okhotsk which was packed with drift ice on board the icebreaker “”Aurora””, and participated in a Lake Kussharo Tour to view crushed frozen lake water. In the evening they watched a fireworks display over Lake Akan. On the third day, they saw Japanese red-crowned cranes, a protected species, at the International Crane Center and visited the Kushiro-Shitsugen Wildlife Center. Though extremely cold, they enjoyed the magnificent nature of Hokkaido while deepening their friendship.”
